CHANGES IN THE MAGNETICS

Picture Loading

Every five years the IAGA releases a new set of coefficients that are used to calculate the magnetic declination, field strength and magnetic directional vectors for any given time and place on the planet for the next five years.

They are released on years divisible by 5, so this is one of those years. Winserve Survey & Winsurv3D have both been updated for the 2005-2010 geomagnetic calculation used to determine magnetic declination. Both programs support IGRF and WWM models.

The files can be downloaded from the support area. Note that in order to use these new files you must have the latest version of PDT software installed. More information on the changes can be had at http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/IAGA/vmod/home.html concerning the changes to the model.

PDT PLANS FOR 2005
PDT will continue the rollout and implementation of http://www.DRILLPOST.com , expanding its functionality to meet our customer's needs. Winsurv Companion, the PALM application, will be released in the first six months after beta testing. Winserve Survey will be rewritten to support the 32 bit .NET platform, which will modernize the software and make future support of the software easier. The new version will probably support direct data exchange with both Winsurv3D and COMPASS by Landmark, making integration of this field software with legacy software easier than ever. The interface will not only be simplified, but improved with the addition of Winsurv3D visualization, rapid template generation of plots and a more intuitive interface for making projections. Other limitations that Winserve Survey currently has, such as the number of surveys per curve, and the total number of wells in a project, will be expanded to handle virtually any real world project. Customers who have maintained maintenance will get this as a standard upgrade. Customers who have not maintained maintenance will have to buy a new copy if they want to use it.
